Today the Government has announced that it will be conducting a review into new psychoactive substances (legal highs) and has published guidance for local authorities on how to tackle “head shops”.
Earlier this year Tracey wrote to the Home Secretary urging the Government to improve current legislation surrounding legal highs following recent tragic deaths and incidents involving these substances.
In reaction to today’s announcement, Tracey said:
“The emergence of legal highs is a fast developing challenge and my main concern is that we need legislation that is fit for purpose and effective, which at the moment I don’t believe to be the case. Legal highs can pose significant risks to health and having raised this directly with the Home Office following recent tragic deaths, I am pleased the Government has committed to conducting a review which I very much hope results in improvements made to the legislation.”
